Marijuana May Increase Your Odds of Developing Gum Disease

A research team at Columbia University School of Dental Medicine analyzed data from roughly 2,000 Americans and of those 27 percent reported they used cannabis one or more times for at least12 months. The team was led by Jaffer Shariff, a postdoctoral resident in periodontology, which they discovered frequent recreation cannabis (marijuana) users were more likely to have signs of moderate to severe gum disease compared to less frequent users. Even when other factors were controlled for, such has smoking cigarettes, frequent cannabis users still were more likely to develop gum disease compared to no frequent users. It is well known that tobacco use increase ones odds of developing gum disease, but according to the findings in this study one may now add cannabis use to the list.
